Die Woche schreitet schon wieder unerbarmlich voran und heute und morgen (Di und Mi) ist noch ein Besuch aus Deutschland hier, der fuer Beschaeftigung sorgt. Der oberste Personaler der Firma ist fuer zwei Tage in Shanghai und hat ein ziemlich ordentliches Programm vor sich, welches fuer uns auch Vorstellung unserer Projekte und diverse Mittag und Abendessen beinhaltet. Heute waren wir vorhin beim Japaner hier im Gebaeude und haben es uns direkt bei Sushi, Sashimi und der lustigen Knetmasse Wasabi umgarnt von Shoyu (Soyasauce) und geraspeltem Daikon (Rettich) gut gehen lassen.
Morgen steht dann noch ein besonderes Highlight an: nicht nur dass am Donnerstag Feiertag ist (ja auch in China gibt es einen Tag der Arbeit, auch wenn hier immer gearbeitet wird) sondern ein Teil der Partycrew aus macao gibt sich die Ehre: Olivia, Yu Yu, Antonio und Arnaud werden hier nach Shanghai kommen und Poka, Eva, Nerwing, Bonnie und ich werden die 4 freudig aufnehmen und durch Shanghai fuehren. Leider kommen die dann nach donnerstag noch in den Genuss nach Qingdao hochzufliegen (ehemalige Kleinkolonie Deutschlands aus der auch das beruehmte Tsingtao Bier kommt, gebraut nach dem deutschen Reinheitsgebot natuerlich). Ich kann leider nicht mit da Freitag hier auch freigegeben wird, dafuer aber der Sonntag zum Arbeitstag mutiert, was bedeutet dass naechste Woche sportliche 6 Tagewoche angesagt ist, aber wir sind ja auch nicht zum Spass hier. Billig und teuer liegt so nah beisammen
Letzte Woche war schon wieder dermassen schnell rum, Montag und Dienstag bis spaet abends geblieben und ueberhaupt kein Land mehr gesehen. Dann mittwochs kam ein bisschen Abwechslung ins Land: Praktikantenstammtisch der deutschen Handelskammer in Shanghai. Erstmal rumgeirrt bis wir die Bar gefunden hatten (Mural Bar), dann waren dort bisher nur 5 Leute, somit war nicht so schwer rauszufinden dass dies der deutsche Stammtisch war. Nette Aufnahme und die Abpruefung der Multitaskingfaehigkeit - wieviele Namen kann man sich in kuerzester Zeit merken, naemlich fast keine... :)) Aber hat sich nach ner Weile gegeben und somit war man froh mit anderen die ersten Erfahrungen hier mit Shanghai und im Arbeitsleben auszutauschen. Bis zu 40 Leute scheinen wohl dagewesen zu sein - bis sich dann der letzte Rest zusammenfand um 12 und noch ins Zapata's (vergleichbar mit Ludwigsplatz wuerd ich mal behaupten) auf ein Bier ist um ein wenig inmitten von schoen und reich in Shanghai als kleiner Student sich zeigen zu duerfen. Insgesamt aber sehr nette Menschen kennengelernt mit denen wir uns wohl oefter noch treffen werden.
Samstag war dann direkt Eva's Geburtstag (hatten wir ja Mittwoch kennengelernt) und wir haben reingefeiert, Tipp war ins Attica zu gehen, da war Specialparty = Specialprice angesagt und fuer sportliche 15 Euro Eintritt war dann drin eher Langeweile pur angesagt, aber ein sehr stylischer Laden mit einer genialen Dachterrasse von der aus man im Sommer mit Sicherheit geniale Bilder von der Skyline Shanghai's machen kann. Dann sind wir noch zu Eva heim und haben da fuer guenstige 4 Kuai (40 cent) noch ein paar Bier auf guenstigerem Wege zu uns genommen. Wilder Taxiritt wieder nach Hause fruehmorgens und dann direkt mal um 7 wieder vom lustigen Presslufthammer auf der Baustelle nebenan geweckt (Fensterisolierung ist so gut dass es sich im 29. Stock so anhoert als waere der Mensch direkt nebenan, obwohl der 27 Stockwerke drunter is). Dann ab auf die Couch zum gammeln, mittags dann Sightseeing mit Stefan (auch vom Stammtisch) und Beate und abends gings dann schon zum geburtstag weiterfeiern wieder zu Eva. Chinesischen Trinkspielen sei Dank kam ich um den Schnaps drumherum und somit waren die Kopfschmerzen auch nur minimal am naechsten Tag. Sonntag dann nur gammeln, Wohnung putzen, was lesen und nochmal natuerlich 2 Stunden Chinesisch lernen (immer noch nur Aussprache weil zu mehr reichts noch nicht).

Late but nevertheless informative: Update for the english speaking community !
Monday and tuesday exhaustive working hours with no land in sight but anyways. Wednesday then the final big moment - German intern meeting from the German Chamber of Commerce. First it took a while to find the venue - Mural bar - and when we got there it was only 5 people waiting, but in the end there were like 40 to 50 interns or young professionals getting to know each other. Nice talking and a big challenge for the multitasking skills - how many names can you capture within the round. Nice talking, meeting nice people and afterwards some of them went further to Zapatas (also one of the famous expat bars here in Shanghai with correlated prices of course: Expat = xpensive).
Saturday we were already invited to Eva's birthday, one girl also from the black forrest region. We had the special tipp of the week to go to Attice, also one of the famous clubs here and so was the cover charge again = 150 Kuai (15 Euros) and noone inside, GGGgggreat. Perfect view though coz the club/bar/lounge is located directly across the bund and therefore we enjoyed the view and the ridiculously expensive beers for 7 Euros. Then we went on to go to Eva's place to get more student like beers at the local supermarket for 4 Kuai (40 cent). Then saturday was basically only hanging around, in the evening we went to Eva's place again to further celebrate her birthday but that was about it. Sunday was the lecture for chinese again (and no, I still cannot speak, we are still about to learn how to pronounce the 4 tones for different words which is still an ongoing learning process. Now the secret update for the english community coz this time I m too lazy to write in both German and English: :))
Week passed by quite quickly again (damn it, already 4 weeks here and only 1 page written for the thesis, any volunteers to finish that one???? :)) and weekend had a special trip ahead. Stefan (also one of the interns from the German Intern meeting) proposed to take a look at Shanghai from 2 hills he found to be a special hint for Shanghai tourists. So we went with the new line 9 (btw - even Poka didnt know that this one existed and called me a liar ;) but in her defense, it just opened like couple of weeks ago). So we went and the metro was driving, and driving, and driving.... one hour in total from our place to the station. There again we fell for the tourist trap and went with a "taxi" for 8 Euros (later the official cab was just 11 Kuai (1,10 Euro) to the "mountains". The mountains were two little hills but interestingly some meeting point for catholic chinese where in the early 20th century they built 3 cathedrals on those hills which was quite a surprise to find there. Nice and warm weather without Smog outside of Shanghai this afternoon was a pleasant present for the 4 of us who went there. Then I was invited for Daniel's birthday party which was also very cool, dinner with all his chinese friends and only his father and me were the only westerners attending. So we laughed, had fun, experienced further the chinese way of dining and later they were playing some music together, really cool evening. Sunday we just went for Hotpot and Chinese lectures but that was it. This week is quite short coz thursday is holiday but now the highlight of the week: Olivia, Yu Yu, Arnaud and maybe even Antonio will come to Shanghai so I hope we will have a nice 1st of May together before they continue travelling through China... Hell no course I didnt forget the Macao party crew but actually SOME peopel have to work from time to time, know it sounds crazy, but thats the way the water flows...

.... the last week passed by quickly as hell, fortunately I was able to hand out my draft of the statement of work to the supervisor in Hamburg and my academic tutor at the university and despite the lack of project management deliverables I still have to produce the project is on its way and the thesis can start as structured as a German can be ;)) I know u didnt expect anything else ;)))
Due to all the action during the week friday was rather low profile - I met up with Poka and we discovered some really nice cheap sports bar like 700m walking distance away from the office. This could actually have the tendency of becoming the most favorable bar in the neighbourhood despite the rock music which is not quite my style but anyways - with drinking prices NOT HIGHER whatsoever drink u might want than 2 euro (20 Kwai) the bar is obviously designed for the student wallet. Popcorn chicken, fish and chips and other snacks for 1 Euro support this image.
Saturday was of course another shopping day, but first of all we started off with sth. I should ve done quite earlier: take chinese lessons. Beate and me met for breakfast at Starbucks (which in Shanghai has the most dense concentration in a city with 68 coffee places all around Shanghai) and then went to People's Square to meet our teacher Wang Qing. Funny thing again - of course he had to find us there coz on a saturday will million black-haired bees humming around in front of Raffles' City its quite hard to find the one who is your new chinese teacher. 2 western people are quite easier to detect :) After a lunch in order to get to know each other (already adapted to chinese business culture) we were checking the bookstore for appropriate material. For our first lecture we decided to go into the parc nearby and for the hell of an amusement of the surrounding Chinese we were practising how to pronounce the tones and the pingyin properly (one couple was running away coz they couldnt stop laughing - one good deed a day by the western community to make people laugh). But it was really nice to learn some stuff and we ll see how well we can proceed in the next few weeks (hopefully we will last that long).
Shopping for reward came afterwards so we went to the cloth-market or as I recall copy-paste-for-clothing-place: One tailor next to each other trying to sell his/her suits or dresses to the visiting community. Silk dresses, cashmere suits - u feel like being in Thailand again here. AAAnd of course despite the fact that I didnt wanted to spend money on the weekend I ended up ordering a suit for 550 Kwai which is roughly 50 Euros. We ll see how the quality will do when I can pick it up in a week.
Evening program was quite perfect too: German DJ legend DJ Tomcraft was in Shanghai and so Beate and me decided to spend money again to go there. First a quick visit to the Windows Scoreboard (u remember, cheap student bar), inhaled some Havana colas and then off to find the club coz it wasnt properly shown where that might be exactly, but after a while we managed to actually find the desired adress (hooray).
really nice club, old-fashioned furniture combined with nice paintings and airbrushes on the wall, club Voltar was hosting DJ Tomcraft and a nice party bunch that was ready for some electronic party time. Professions like sons or daughters were also there spending their parents spare money on Hennessy XO and I got almost a shock when I went to the bar and ordered 2 beers for an unbelievable amount of 160 Kwai - SHOCKING. But ok, guess the flight from Germany has to be paid also. But was a very pleasant evening and after 3.30pm is was walking in the actually quiet streets of Shanghai to find my way home coz i didnt wanted to go with the cab.
Sunday was under the opympic influence :))
Daniel and me went to the Gym ( I already applied there for half a year for some quite ok money), and that not enough, we went out into the suburbs in Pudong to meet his chinese colleagues and friends from his last stay in China and played soccer for almost 3 hours. That was really funny but quite exhausting and finally we got together with almost 20 people to have typical chinese dinner (with incredible spicy and hot food from Sichuan province, but which was very enjoyable to have an experience like that with so many people). Some spoke english, we tried our 4 words of mandarin and so we had funny times and some insights about chinese eating and meeting again.
Therefore today was muscle ache all over the place and I could barely move, but had to sit on my chair anyways quite long in order to get my project ahead.
Then funny last thing for all my people from the MBA: I couldnt believe it myself, we had an Alumni meeting from Pforzheim people in Shanghai and the managing director of the company called Wuerth here in Shanghai is also an Alumni from Pforzheim so we ended up 4 people meeting there and talking about our experience with the lovely city of Pforzheim :) Unfortunately we couldnt get in touch with Prof. Pfoertsch coz he had other plans, but Uwe told us they regularly meet up with sth. like 5 to 6 people once a month so I am curious if next month I will have the opportunity to see our Leadership Professor again. And of course we went to Paulaner, the german wheat beer brewery branch here in Shanghai in Xintiandi (the amusement mile close to the office).

Weekend in Shanghai - Shopping and famous Djs
Nachdem die Arbeitswoche wirklich wie im Flug vergangen ist und ich meinen ersten Projektantrag bei Prof. und Sponsor in Hamburg beim GL vorgestellt und bis auf kleinere Aenderungen kann das Projekt dann soweit losgehen. Freitag abend war dann nicht mehr wirklich viel geboten, war ziemlich kaputt von der Woche, waren lediglich noch was trinken in einer der wenigen billigen Bars hier, wobei das mit Sicherheit meine Lieblingsbar in Zukunft werden koennte, bis auf die Rockmusik die nich so ganz mein Fall is. Das Ganze ist zirka 1km vom Office hier entfernt, heisst Windows Scoreboard und bietet studentisches, wohin das Auge reicht: Alle Drinks kosten nicht mehr als 20 Kwai (also weniger als 2 Euro) - und das kann sich dann doch sehen lassen. Weiterhin kann man fuer 1 Euro diverse Snacks zu den Getraenken ordern- Haehnchen-Popcorn, Fish & Chips, Pommes, Popcorn usw. usw.... Der LongIsland war allerdings doch eher gewoehnungsbeduerftig aber so ein Havana-Cola fuer 2 Euro ist dann doch einfach genial fuer den Freitag-Feierabend.
Samstag war dann sehr spannend: Beate und ich sind morgens fruehstuecken beim Starbucks gewesen (Shanghai hat uebrigens die groesste Anzahl Starbucks in einer Stadt: 68 Filialen) und haben uns dann auf den Weg zum People's Square gemacht um unseren empfohlenen Chinesisch-Lehrer zu treffen. Bzw. natuerlich hat er uns finden muessen weil bei den Millionen am Samstag mittag vorm Einkaufszentrum wird es schwer den einen Chinesen zu finden, wohingegen zwei verplant suchende Westler dann doch eher schwer zu uebersehen sind. Dann hatten wir das Vergnuegen Wang Qing (sprich: Wang Tsching) zu treffen, er wurde uns empfohlen, studiert Englisch und Japanisch an der Uni fuer Fremdsprachen und wird wohl fuer die Zeit hier unser Chinesischlehrer. Beate und ich haben uns gesagt wir wollen mal schauen ob und wie weit wir in drei Monaten kommen, aber solange man wenigstens weiss wie man das umschriebene der Zeichen aussprechen muss kann man von da an selbst ein wenig an den Vokabeln feilen. Haben dann nach gemeinsamem Mittagessen uns Buecher angeschaut und uns fuer eines entschieden und erste Stunde gabs dann im Park mit Ausspracheuebungen, seeeeeehr zur Belustigung der uns umringenden Chinesen. Westler auslachen bei Sprachuebungen ist dann doch ein hervorragendes Wochenendvergnuegen, dem man sich ausgiebig und voller Freude hingibt. War uns natuerlich egal und somit konnten wir die verschiedenen Zisch- und Nasallaute ueben und uns freuen, dass unser Lehrer so geduldig war und die einfachsten Buchstaben in den versch. Tonebenen immer und immer wieder mit uns uebte. Denke das wird ganz interessant.
Samstag mittag sind wir dann noch auf den Stoffmarkt weil Wochenende ohne Shopping ist in Shanghai ja kein richtiges Wochenende. Schwer davon ueberzeugt nichts kaufen zu wollen diesmal ging das natuerlich feinstens in die Hose: Auf 2 Stockwerken auf groesster Flaeche reihen sich eng an eng hunderte Schneider die versuchen ihre Kunstwerke an Mann/Frau zu bringen. Feinste Seidenkleider, tausende Anzugvarianten und auch Kopierarbeiten (hier lohnt es sich mal dass Chinesen darin Experten sind) (heisst man bringt sein Wunschanzug mit und der wird dann einfach nachgebaut). Also bin ich rueber zu Beate und hab die daheim abgeholt (nachdem ich im Spiegel-Text noch die bittere KSC-Niederlage verfolgt hatte und dann sowieso ein Bier brauchte um das Trauma runterzuspuelen) und dann gings los in die Windows-Bar, um studentisch warmzuwerden. Danach dann ins Voltar und da war er - Mr. Tomcraft an den Decks in einem sehr genial aufgebauten Club. Neureiche Chinesen und viele Westler gemeinsam am feiern und Geld von Papi ausgeben. Weggehen in Shanghai ist das krasse Gegenteil von Shopping - SCHWEINETEUER !! Eintritt 100 Kwai und als ich die erste Runde Bier bestellt hatte wurde mir fast schlecht: 160 Kwai fuer 2 Bier - 8 EURO fuer ein kleines Corona. Da wollte ich dann schon gar nicht mehr genau wissen was die neben uns fuer ihre Flasche Vodka gezahlt hatten, aber zahlt ja Papi von daher kein Problem denk ich mal. Aber war ein sehr genialer Abend und um 4 bin ich dann den Heimweg angetreten und irrte ein wenig durch die Strassen bis ich wieder vertrautes Terrain gefunden hatte und heim bin.
Sonntag stand dann im Motto des olympischen Gedankens: Dabeisein is alles. Daniel ging mal mit ins Fitnessstudio in dem ich mich angemeldet habe (megafit, direkt gegenueber vom Office, meine Karte muss ich mal noch einscannen, die ist der Hammer!!) 1500 Kwai fuer ein halbes Jahr, das geht grad noch so, wobei ein Jahr dann nur 1800 kostet, aber was soll ich machen, bin halt nur solang hier, dumm gelaufen. Dann ne Stunde warmmachen und danach gings ab nach Pudong in die Vororte, wo wir dann mit Daniels Kumpels Fussball gespielt haben drei Stunden lang. Danach waren wir uebelst kaputt und in gemeinsamer Runde mit ca. 20 Leuten wurde dann gegessen in typisch chinesischer Art, war schon wieder ein witziges Erlebnis !! Essen war irre scharf, somit hab ich beim Essen dann fast noch mehr geschwitzt als beim Fussball, aber war auch superlecker !! (Dirty, mach dich schonmal auf was gefasst hier;))))) Da musste vorher fleissig ueben, um Scharf kommste hier einfach nicht drumherum. Bisschen auf Chilis schlafen oder so hilft vielleicht).
Heute ist natuerlich Mega-Muskelkater angesagt und eine neue Woche, diese Woche wird das Projekt weiter vorangetrieben.
Heute kommt noch ein anderer Absolvent aus Pforzheim in die Stadt und auch Prof. Pfoertsch wird den Weg ins Stadtzentrum antreten und somit werden wir heute abend eine Studenten-Prof. Runde haben die gemeinsam im Paulaner hier ein paar Bier nehmen wird und auf die guten alten Zeiten in Pforzheim anstossen wird.

Samstag war dann sehr spannend: Beate und ich sind morgens fruehstuecken beim Starbucks gewesen (Shanghai hat uebrigens die groesste Anzahl Starbucks in einer Stadt: 68 Filialen) und haben uns dann auf den Weg zum People's Square gemacht um unseren empfohlenen Chinesisch-Lehrer zu treffen. Bzw. natuerlich hat er uns finden muessen weil bei den Millionen am Samstag mittag vorm Einkaufszentrum wird es schwer den einen Chinesen zu finden, wohingegen zwei verplant suchende Westler dann doch eher schwer zu uebersehen sind. Dann hatten wir das Vergnuegen Wang Qing (sprich: Wang Tsching) zu treffen, er wurde uns empfohlen, studiert Englisch und Japanisch an der Uni fuer Fremdsprachen und wird wohl fuer die Zeit hier unser Chinesischlehrer. Beate und ich haben uns gesagt wir wollen mal schauen ob und wie weit wir in drei Monaten kommen, aber solange man wenigstens weiss wie man das umschriebene der Zeichen aussprechen muss kann man von da an selbst ein wenig an den Vokabeln feilen. Haben dann nach gemeinsamem Mittagessen uns Buecher angeschaut und uns fuer eines entschieden und erste Stunde gabs dann im Park mit Ausspracheuebungen, seeeeeehr zur Belustigung der uns umringenden Chinesen. Westler auslachen bei Sprachuebungen ist dann doch ein hervorragendes Wochenendvergnuegen, dem man sich ausgiebig und voller Freude hingibt. War uns natuerlich egal und somit konnten wir die verschiedenen Zisch- und Nasallaute ueben und uns freuen, dass unser Lehrer so geduldig war und die einfachsten Buchstaben in den versch. Tonebenen immer und immer wieder mit uns uebte. Denke das wird ganz interessant.
Samstag mittag sind wir dann noch auf den Stoffmarkt weil Wochenende ohne Shopping ist in Shanghai ja kein richtiges Wochenende. Schwer davon ueberzeugt nichts kaufen zu wollen diesmal ging das natuerlich feinstens in die Hose: Auf 2 Stockwerken auf groesster Flaeche reihen sich eng an eng hunderte Schneider die versuchen ihre Kunstwerke an Mann/Frau zu bringen. Feinste Seidenkleider, tausende Anzugvarianten und auch Kopierarbeiten (hier lohnt es sich mal dass Chinesen darin Experten sind) (heisst man bringt sein Wunschanzug mit und der wird dann einfach nachgebaut). Montag und der Magen streikt
Nach erfolgreichem Shopping gestern erneut ging es heute dann doch schon wieder ins Buero - seltsame erste Woche aber so is das halt. FR und SO Wochenende dafuer SA und MO Arbeitswoche. Gestern war dann doch mal ausschlafen angesagt (bin irgendwie immer noch mit Schlafkrankheit befallen seit ich hier angekommen bin, wenn ich keine 8 Stunden schlafe geht wirklich uuuueberhaupt nichts tagsueber) und dann wieder Shopping. Es galt immer noch die Wochenaufgabe zu erfuellen - Waeschestaender kaufen. Da Chinesen ja ihre Waesche einfach an irgendwelche Stangen in und um Wohnung herum aufhaengen war das auch wirklich nicht so ganz so einfach. Nach wilder Rumsucherei haben Beate und ich dann endlich den Carrefour gefunden in der Naehe eines Parks hier (Daniel: ZhongShangpark noch ein Begriff???) und dort gab es dann tatsaechlich einen - YIPPIE. 15 Euro aber gut, muss ja sein.
Dann habe ich mir noch ueberlegt Daniel (meinem Supervisor) fuer das Angebot der Unterkunft ein Dankeschoen oder Einweihungsgeschenk zu kaufen, habe mich dann fuer Unterhaltung per DVD Player entschieden, die zu meinem Entsetzen teurer sind als die in Deutschland und somit war das billigste Model dennoch 40 euro teuer. Abends daheim stolz aufgebaut und praesentiert habe ich dann auch noch das Montags-Geraet erwischt und natuerlich hat der Player ne Macke und ich muss die Woche nochmal die Weltreise zum Carrefour antreten, um den Spass wieder umzutauschen.
Dann waren wir noch essen, naja, so kann man es ja eigentlich nicht nenne, ich wuerde es eher als chinesische Mutprobe betiteln: Essen an einem der fahrenden Strassenwaegen, die ihre Fleischauslagen vor deinen Augen ueber dem Bottich voller Holzkohle grillen (ja Mum, dumme Idee, ich weiss, aber habs jetzt auch gelernt). Also ran an das Wagnis und prompt mit ner Magenverstimmung belohnt geworden. Aber das faellt irgendwie unter die erste Umstellung in China, jetzt ist der Magen hoffentlich auch chinesisch umgestellt und macht keine Zicken mehr. Bin dann gestern nach nem halben Tag gegangen (16 Uhr), schleppte mich noch durch bis ich die erste Gliederung meiner Arbeit mit meinem Prof. telefonisch besprechen konnte und dann war genug. Ab ins Bett und heute gehts schon wieder... leichtes Ziehen noch in Magengegend aber soweit wieder alles ok.
Die Arbeitswoche kann weitergehen...

weird starting week but what can you do - Friday was holiday but all of a sudden you find yourself in the office on a saturday, also ok coz my supervisor had to start/finish a project already related to my master thesis. Yesterday I was sleeping in (somehow I am really adapting to the chinese community, I sort of can sleep everywhere and without my 8 hours per night or dayshift it's impossible to get things done during the day). After that we (me and Beate, the other intern) went shopping - AGAIN. After she bought some stuff at the fake market we were looking for my task of the week - finding a cloth hanger for the flat to dry my stuff after the washing machine has tortured it. Chinese people only use bars or every available spot to hang their clothes so I wasnt very successful so far. After some searching and Poka helping out with the adress and location we finally managed to find the Carrefour (thank you french community) and they finally had what I wanted - 150 Yuan but what the heck, it s worth it !!
For my nice accommodation (which for now at least is cheap coz its free) I wanted to thank my supervisor and after some running through the aisles I decided to go with entertainment stuff and bought a DVD player, which was the cheapest there but compared to german prices was still expensive with 40 Euro. but ok. Unfortunately somehow I managed to get the so called "monday release" so of course it wasnt working as it should be, it starts playing dvds and then stops after a couple of minutes. Well, guess I have to do some travelling again this week to return the stuff to the Carrefour.
My highlight this week was the crazy attempt to test my stomach so Daniel and me went to get food at the street stalls where the chinese are wildly cooking stuff and grilling meat on their mobile oven equipment. What can I say, it turned out to be quite a heavy challenge for my stomach and so I had to leave the office yesterday after half a day (4pm) to go home and put myself to rest.
today everythings back to normal and the rest of the working week can come. Right now we are hoping that the weather towards the weekend will get better coz we wanted to plan for some daytrip or sth. but we have to see, right now all towers here are surrounded by fog and clouds and smog combined with cold temperatures, so not that amuzing.

Erste Eindruecke - First Impressions
Samstag, 05.04. - 1 Woche schon wieder rum, wie die Zeit verfliegt...
Nachdem ich letzte Woche ja hier angekommen bin ist schon fast ein wenig Alltag eingekehrt. Quartier bei meinem Supervisor bezogen im Gaestezimmer, welches ich denke ich auch beibehalten werde da es einfach nah am Office ist und einfach guenstig is und man sich den Stress erspart ne Wohnung hier in dem Chaos zu suchen.
Kulturell blieb mir ja aufgrund der Macao-Erfahrung der Kulturschock schon ein wenig erspart, da ich ja bedingt schon wusste was mich hier so erwarten wird. Chaotischer Verkehr, unendlich viele Menschen auf der Strasse, Grossstadtlaerm Tag und Nacht, viele Expats hier in Shanghai und natuerlich das unfassbar breite Shoppingangebot machen die Stadt zu einem ganz besonderen Erlebnis.
Auf den diversen Markten habe ich mich nun auch reichlich eingedeckt mit schoenen Hemden fuer guenstiges Geld, heute wurde schon die erste Ladung zum reinigen gegeben fuer 6 Yuan (mittlerweile als alter Shanghaier nur noch umgangssprachlich Kwai genannt) das Hemd, das kann sich wirklich mal sehen lassen. Schuhe gabs auch schon auch wenn der designtechnische Aspekt bei Schuhen hier doch noch etwas zu wuenschen uebrig laesst aber das passt schon, stehen ja eh unterm Schreibtisch und interessiert ja dann eher nicht soooo wirklich. Vorhang, Waeschestaender, PSP und DVD Player stehen fuer die naechsten paar Tage noch auf der Shopping Liste, dann sind fuers erste saemtliche Shopping Traeume auch schon verwirklicht und die Arbeit bzw. das Projekt kann dann richtig losgehen.
Das Office hier ist genau Downtown (wird jetzt nur Daniel wirklich was sagen), wir sitzen hier im 32. Stock mit Wahnsinns Aussicht - Bilder lad ich bei Gelegenheit noch hoch - da kann man schon mal den Blick etwas schweifen lassen auch wenn mein Schreibtisch (oder genauer gesagt cubicle) nicht mit Blick aufs Fenster sondern auf die chinesische Wandkarte gerichtet ist. Smog gibts natuerlich auch bei den leicht kalten Temperaturen (derzeit zwischen 15 und 20 Grad) auch schon, morgens kann man aus dem Buero nicht wirklich weit sehen weil sich ein grauer Schleier uber die Stadt und um die vielen uns umgebenden Wolkenkratzer legt. Rein Oertlich sitzen wir direkt an einer der bekannten Shopping Strasse (Huaihai Middle Road oder auch Huaihai Zhong Lu), zu Fuss circa 10 Minuten vom People's Square entfernt, direkt im Gebaeude gibts ne MetroStation, also zentraler geht es fast eigentlich nicht mehr. Blick auf den beruehmten Pearl Oriental TV Tower haben wir auch, was will man mehr.
Erste Woche war natuerlich anstrengend - so viele Leute kennenlernen, Kollegen sind alle richtig nett, wir wurden gleich gut aufgenommen und waren Donnerstag abend direkt mal mit den Kollegen im Paulaner hier im Xientiandi (teuerste Kneipenstrasse hier) und haben uns Weizen fuer 7 euro gegoennt. Es gibt viele Restaurants hier in der Gegend, somit wird die Mittagspause immer genutzt um erstmal 15 Minuten zu ueberlegen wo man eigentlich hinwill, von gut und guenstig bis zu teuer und europaeisch gibt es hier wirklich saemtliche Wahlmoeglichkeiten im Umkreis von 100Metern.
Gestern war hier Feiertag was man lediglich daran gemerkt hat dass auf den Strassen noch viel mehr Menschen unterwegs waren, ansonsten waren alle Geschaefte normal geoeffnet, was wir dann auch genutzt haben und 6 Stunden auf den Maerkten unterwegs waren. Daher auch die unkonventionellen Arbeitszeiten hier, ich sitze jetzt naemlich Samstag hier im Buero und bin bei weitem nicht der Einzigste, aber mein Chef hat eine dringende Sache welche mir aber schon wirklich mit meiner Thesis weiterhilft von daher ist es auch wirklich ok mal Samstags ins Buero zu kommen.
Soweit mal die ersten Eindruecke, koennte natuerlich noch ganze Romane schreiben aber jetzt ruft dann mal wieder die Arbeit, Mittagspaus is rum :))

it's been already one week since I arrived here and it already feels like a sort of everyday's business life. I am still staying at my supervisor's place and I guess I will accept his offer to stay there during my time here since it's very close to the office and it's apparently quite cheap and you don't have to get stressed while looking for cheap flats coz living in downtown for little money is almost impossible.
Thanks to our experience in Macao and the trips we did throughout the semester the culture shock didn't occur to me since I already knew how the chinese community behaves and what the main differences are. Shanghai being the third biggest city in the world is nevertheless one great experience for itself. Chaotic travel situations, a multitude of people on the streets, big city noises throughout day and night, a astonishingly big expat community here and the incredible shopping possibilities turn Shanghai really into a fantastic adventure.
I was already bargaining and buying stuff at one of the famous markets here, for now I am owner of a great variety of business shirts (I guess 12 by now) and today I was already bringing some of them to the cleaning experts that wash and iron the stuff for 6 Yuan (or Kwai as the chinese call their currency). PSP, DVD player, nice shoes and other stuff is still on the shopping list but I guess I ll be around for a couple of days more here so no need to rush.
Our office building or the floor in the building is really downtown and central. We are here sitting at the 32nd floor in Shanghai Central Plaza which is located roughly 10 Minutes walking distance away from people square and if it wouldnt be for the smog in the city we can see the Pearl Oriental Tower on the other side on the Bund. we are located at one of the main shopping roads here in Shanghai besides East Nanjing (Huaihai Zhong Lu or Huaihai Middle road) which a lot of other famous names located in nearby skyscrapers - McKinsey, PWC and some other consulting companies all have their own towers around here. There's an astinishing variety of restaurants within 100meters around the building so the lunch break always is used to discuss for 15 minutes what the choice of the day will be - from really cheap chinese eats up to expensive european cuisine, everything what u wanna eat u can find it here.
Yesterday Chinese Government introduced a new holiday, but despite the fact that there was even more people on the streets you would not notice. All the shops were opened so of course we were further exploring the shopping opportunities. Since my supervisor has to prepare sth. for next week we are in the office today, saturday, but since that one's already some big work for my thesis I am totally ok with spending my time in the office on a weekend. Flexibility is the keyword in all matters concerning business in Asia I guess.
i could post more than a book already again about the things I noticed and experienced here but lunchbreak is over so I gotta go back to work now.

Quartier bei meinem Supervisor bezogen im Gaestezimmer, welches ich denke ich auch beibehalten werde da es einfach nah am Office ist und einfach guenstig is und man sich den Stress erspart ne Wohnung hier in dem Chaos zu suchen.
Kulturell blieb mir ja aufgrund der Macao-Erfahrung der Kulturschock schon ein wenig erspart, da ich ja bedingt schon wusste was mich hier so erwarten wird. Chaotischer Verkehr, unendlich viele Menschen auf der Strasse, Grossstadtlaerm Tag und Nacht, viele Expats hier in Shanghai und natuerlich das unfassbar breite Shoppingangebot machen die Stadt zu einem ganz besonderen Erlebnis.
Auf den diversen Markten habe ich mich nun auch reichlich eingedeckt mit schoenen Hemden fuer guenstiges Geld, heute wurde schon die erste Ladung zum reinigen gegeben fuer 6 Yuan (mittlerweile als alter Shanghaier nur noch umgangssprachlich Kwai genannt) das Hemd, das kann sich wirklich mal sehen lassen. Schuhe gabs auch schon auch wenn der designtechnische Aspekt bei Schuhen hier doch noch etwas zu wuenschen uebrig laesst aber das passt schon, stehen ja eh unterm Schreibtisch und interessiert ja dann eher nicht soooo wirklich. Vorhang, Waeschestaender, PSP und DVD Player stehen fuer die naechsten paar Tage noch auf der Shopping Liste, dann sind fuers erste saemtliche Shopping Traeume auch schon verwirklicht und die Arbeit bzw. das Projekt kann dann richtig losgehen.
Das Office hier ist genau Downtown (wird jetzt nur Daniel wirklich was sagen), wir sitzen hier im 32. Stock mit Wahnsinns Aussicht - Bilder lad ich bei Gelegenheit noch hoch - da kann man schon mal den Blick etwas schweifen lassen auch wenn mein Schreibtisch (oder genauer gesagt cubicle) nicht mit Blick aufs Fenster sondern auf die chinesische Wandkarte gerichtet ist. Smog gibts natuerlich auch bei den leicht kalten Temperaturen (derzeit zwischen 15 und 20 Grad) auch schon, morgens kann man aus dem Buero nicht wirklich weit sehen weil sich ein grauer Schleier uber die Stadt und um die vielen uns umgebenden Wolkenkratzer legt. Rein Oertlich sitzen wir direkt an einer der bekannten Shopping Strasse (Huaihai Middle Road oder auch Huaihai Zhong Lu), zu Fuss circa 10 Minuten vom People's Square entfernt, direkt im Gebaeude gibts ne MetroStation, also zentraler geht es fast eigentlich nicht mehr. Blick auf den beruehmten Pearl Oriental TV Tower haben wir auch, was will man mehr.
Erste Woche war natuerlich anstrengend - so viele Leute kennenlernen, Kollegen sind alle richtig nett, wir wurden gleich gut aufgenommen und waren Donnerstag abend direkt mal mit den Kollegen im Paulaner hier im Xientiandi (teuerste Kneipenstrasse hier) und haben uns Weizen fuer 7 euro gegoennt. Es gibt viele Restaurants hier in der Gegend, somit wird die Mittagspause immer genutzt um erstmal 15 Minuten zu ueberlegen wo man eigentlich hinwill, von gut und guenstig bis zu teuer und europaeisch gibt es hier wirklich saemtliche Wahlmoeglichkeiten im Umkreis von 100Metern.
Gestern war hier Feiertag was man lediglich daran gemerkt hat dass auf den Strassen noch viel mehr Menschen unterwegs waren, ansonsten waren alle Geschaefte normal geoeffnet, was wir dann auch genutzt haben und 6 Stunden auf den Maerkten unterwegs waren. Daher auch die unkonventionellen Arbeitszeiten hier, ich sitze jetzt naemlich Samstag hier im Buero und bin bei weitem nicht der Einzigste, aber mein Chef hat eine dringende Sache welche mir aber schon wirklich mit meiner Thesis weiterhilft von daher ist es auch wirklich ok mal Samstags ins Buero zu kommen.
Soweit mal die ersten Eindruecke, koennte natuerlich noch ganze Romane schreiben aber jetzt ruft dann mal wieder die Arbeit, Mittagspaus is rum :))

it's been already one week since I arrived here and it already feels like a sort of everyday's business life. I am still staying at my supervisor's place and I guess I will accept his offer to stay there during my time here since it's very close to the office and it's apparently quite cheap and you don't have to get stressed while looking for cheap flats coz living in downtown for little money is almost impossible.
Thanks to our experience in Macao and the trips we did throughout the semester the culture shock didn't occur to me since I already knew how the chinese community behaves and what the main differences are. Shanghai being the third biggest city in the world is nevertheless one great experience for itself. Chaotic travel situations, a multitude of people on the streets, big city noises throughout day and night, a astonishingly big expat community here and the incredible shopping possibilities turn Shanghai really into a fantastic adventure.
I was already bargaining and buying stuff at one of the famous markets here, for now I am owner of a great variety of business shirts (I guess 12 by now) and today I was already bringing some of them to the cleaning experts that wash and iron the stuff for 6 Yuan (or Kwai as the chinese call their currency). PSP, DVD player, nice shoes and other stuff is still on the shopping list but I guess I ll be around for a couple of days more here so no need to rush.
Our office building or the floor in the building is really downtown and central. We are here sitting at the 32nd floor in Shanghai Central Plaza which is located roughly 10 Minutes walking distance away from people square and if it wouldnt be for the smog in the city we can see the Pearl Oriental Tower on the other side on the Bund. we are located at one of the main shopping roads here in Shanghai besides East Nanjing (Huaihai Zhong Lu or Huaihai Middle road) which a lot of other famous names located in nearby skyscrapers - McKinsey, PWC and some other consulting companies all have their own towers around here. There's an astinishing variety of restaurants within 100meters around the building so the lunch break always is used to discuss for 15 minutes what the choice of the day will be - from really cheap chinese eats up to expensive european cuisine, everything what u wanna eat u can find it here.
Yesterday Chinese Government introduced a new holiday, but despite the fact that there was even more people on the streets you would not notice. All the shops were opened so of course we were further exploring the shopping opportunities. Since my supervisor has to prepare sth. for next week we are in the office today, saturday, but since that one's already some big work for my thesis I am totally ok with spending my time in the office on a weekend. Flexibility is the keyword in all matters concerning business in Asia I guess.
i could post more than a book already again about the things I noticed and experienced here but lunchbreak is over so I gotta go back to work now.
