Erste Eindruecke - First Impressions

Samstag, 05.04. - 1 Woche schon wieder rum, wie die Zeit verfliegt...

Nachdem ich letzte Woche ja hier angekommen bin ist schon fast ein wenig Alltag eingekehrt. Quartier bei meinem Supervisor bezogen im Gaestezimmer, welches ich denke ich auch beibehalten werde da es einfach nah am Office ist und einfach guenstig is und man sich den Stress erspart ne Wohnung hier in dem Chaos zu suchen.

Kulturell blieb mir ja aufgrund der Macao-Erfahrung der Kulturschock schon ein wenig erspart, da ich ja bedingt schon wusste was mich hier so erwarten wird. Chaotischer Verkehr, unendlich viele Menschen auf der Strasse, Grossstadtlaerm Tag und Nacht, viele Expats hier in Shanghai und natuerlich das unfassbar breite Shoppingangebot machen die Stadt zu einem ganz besonderen Erlebnis.

Auf den diversen Markten habe ich mich nun auch reichlich eingedeckt mit schoenen Hemden fuer guenstiges Geld, heute wurde schon die erste Ladung zum reinigen gegeben fuer 6 Yuan (mittlerweile als alter Shanghaier nur noch umgangssprachlich Kwai genannt) das Hemd, das kann sich wirklich mal sehen lassen. Schuhe gabs auch schon auch wenn der designtechnische Aspekt bei Schuhen hier doch noch etwas zu wuenschen uebrig laesst aber das passt schon, stehen ja eh unterm Schreibtisch und interessiert ja dann eher nicht soooo wirklich. Vorhang, Waeschestaender, PSP und DVD Player stehen fuer die naechsten paar Tage noch auf der Shopping Liste, dann sind fuers erste saemtliche Shopping Traeume auch schon verwirklicht und die Arbeit bzw. das Projekt kann dann richtig losgehen.

Das Office hier ist genau Downtown (wird jetzt nur Daniel wirklich was sagen), wir sitzen hier im 32. Stock mit Wahnsinns Aussicht - Bilder lad ich bei Gelegenheit noch hoch - da kann man schon mal den Blick etwas schweifen lassen auch wenn mein Schreibtisch (oder genauer gesagt cubicle) nicht mit Blick aufs Fenster sondern auf die chinesische Wandkarte gerichtet ist. Smog gibts natuerlich auch bei den leicht kalten Temperaturen (derzeit zwischen 15 und 20 Grad) auch schon, morgens kann man aus dem Buero nicht wirklich weit sehen weil sich ein grauer Schleier uber die Stadt und um die vielen uns umgebenden Wolkenkratzer legt. Rein Oertlich sitzen wir direkt an einer der bekannten Shopping Strasse (Huaihai Middle Road oder auch Huaihai Zhong Lu), zu Fuss circa 10 Minuten vom People's Square entfernt, direkt im Gebaeude gibts ne MetroStation, also zentraler geht es fast eigentlich nicht mehr. Blick auf den beruehmten Pearl Oriental TV Tower haben wir auch, was will man mehr.

Erste Woche war natuerlich anstrengend - so viele Leute kennenlernen, Kollegen sind alle richtig nett, wir wurden gleich gut aufgenommen und waren Donnerstag abend direkt mal mit den Kollegen im Paulaner hier im Xientiandi (teuerste Kneipenstrasse hier) und haben uns Weizen fuer 7 euro gegoennt. Es gibt viele Restaurants hier in der Gegend, somit wird die Mittagspause immer genutzt um erstmal 15 Minuten zu ueberlegen wo man eigentlich hinwill, von gut und guenstig bis zu teuer und europaeisch gibt es hier wirklich saemtliche Wahlmoeglichkeiten im Umkreis von 100Metern.

Gestern war hier Feiertag was man lediglich daran gemerkt hat dass auf den Strassen noch viel mehr Menschen unterwegs waren, ansonsten waren alle Geschaefte normal geoeffnet, was wir dann auch genutzt haben und 6 Stunden auf den Maerkten unterwegs waren. Daher auch die unkonventionellen Arbeitszeiten hier, ich sitze jetzt naemlich Samstag hier im Buero und bin bei weitem nicht der Einzigste, aber mein Chef hat eine dringende Sache welche mir aber schon wirklich mit meiner Thesis weiterhilft von daher ist es auch wirklich ok mal Samstags ins Buero zu kommen.

Soweit mal die ersten Eindruecke, koennte natuerlich noch ganze Romane schreiben aber jetzt ruft dann mal wieder die Arbeit, Mittagspaus is rum :))

it's been already one week since I arrived here and it already feels like a sort of everyday's business life. I am still staying at my supervisor's place and I guess I will accept his offer to stay there during my time here since it's very close to the office and it's apparently quite cheap and you don't have to get stressed while looking for cheap flats coz living in downtown for little money is almost impossible.

Thanks to our experience in Macao and the trips we did throughout the semester the culture shock didn't occur to me since I already knew how the chinese community behaves and what the main differences are. Shanghai being the third biggest city in the world is nevertheless one great experience for itself. Chaotic travel situations, a multitude of people on the streets, big city noises throughout day and night, a astonishingly big expat community here and the incredible shopping possibilities turn Shanghai really into a fantastic adventure.

I was already bargaining and buying stuff at one of the famous markets here, for now I am owner of a great variety of business shirts (I guess 12 by now) and today I was already bringing some of them to the cleaning experts that wash and iron the stuff for 6 Yuan (or Kwai as the chinese call their currency). PSP, DVD player, nice shoes and other stuff is still on the shopping list but I guess I ll be around for a couple of days more here so no need to rush.

Our office building or the floor in the building is really downtown and central. We are here sitting at the 32nd floor in Shanghai Central Plaza which is located roughly 10 Minutes walking distance away from people square and if it wouldnt be for the smog in the city we can see the Pearl Oriental Tower on the other side on the Bund. we are located at one of the main shopping roads here in Shanghai besides East Nanjing (Huaihai Zhong Lu or Huaihai Middle road) which a lot of other famous names located in nearby skyscrapers - McKinsey, PWC and some other consulting companies all have their own towers around here. There's an astinishing variety of restaurants within 100meters around the building so the lunch break always is used to discuss for 15 minutes what the choice of the day will be - from really cheap chinese eats up to expensive european cuisine, everything what u wanna eat u can find it here.

Yesterday Chinese Government introduced a new holiday, but despite the fact that there was even more people on the streets you would not notice. All the shops were opened so of course we were further exploring the shopping opportunities. Since my supervisor has to prepare sth. for next week we are in the office today, saturday, but since that one's already some big work for my thesis I am totally ok with spending my time in the office on a weekend. Flexibility is the keyword in all matters concerning business in Asia I guess.

i could post more than a book already again about the things I noticed and experienced here but lunchbreak is over so I gotta go back to work now.
